In order to master traveling for free you need to be able to stay places for free as well. Here are some ideas on how to avoid the high expensive of hotel rooms.
Couch Surfing
If you are traveling an interesting alternative for hotels and hostels is sleeping on a couch of a stranger. Done securely though – for example through different web communities. Each of these communities have different ways of working, but the main thing is that they are free, the accommodation offered is free, and you and the person with whom you’d be staying can get to know each other before hand and decide if you want to do it.

Camping
Camping is the most obvious way to stay over somewhere for free, take your tent with you (you can pick tents up for free at festivals) and pitch it wherever you want to stay that night. Camping has it’s obvious drawbacks of heavy equipment and sometimes cold nights. It is also advisable to check the legality of randomly camping (each country has different laws) and check the safety of your location, you don’t want to wake up to a bear in the morning or to find that you have been robbed.
Other Ideas Travel at night and sleep as you are transported, that way when you wake up you are at your destination and you have the energy to enjoy it. Or sleep during the day, somewhere warm and travel at night though this is not a particularly fun way to do things.
Search the internet to find communities that maybe willing to have visitors, such as protest sites or squats. Protest sites are always welcoming to visitors and can usually put you up in a tree house, tent or other type of structure. They are there to protest and as long as you respect the cause you will be welcome to stay for as long as you want. Websites of UK protest sites are:
